Today I would like to talk about one of my favorite sculptors, Andy Goldsworthy. He is a very unique sculptor because rather than chiseling stone or carving wood, he only works with naturally occurring objects, like plants, stones and trees.

sculptor – 彫刻家
chisel stone -石を彫る
carve wood -木を彫る
naturally-occurring objects – 自然発生の物

For this sculpture, Andy Goldsworthy gathered hundreds of leaves. He carefully selected each leaf, making sure the color and shape were exactly right. The result is this beautiful circular pattern.  All the colors are from natural materials. He did not use paint, only leaves and earth.  And yet, it seems like this sculpture is glowing, like a sun. When he is finished with a sculpture like this, he takes photos of it and then abandons it. Perhaps this beautiful pattern only lasted for a couple of hours.
pattern 模様
glowing 燃えるような
abandon 見捨てる

Here he has collected several icicles and carefully glued them together using his own saliva.  The sculpture almost seems to be floating in the air.  He must have had very cold hands after he had finished.
icicle – 氷柱
glue together – のりで貼り合わせる
saliva – つば

Andy Goldsworthy has made sculptures all around the world, including in Japan. The artist went to Kiinagashima in Mie Prefecture, where he made this sculpture from driftwood that he had picked up from the beach.

This sculpture is part of a permanent outdoor exhibit in a gallery in York, England.  Unlike, the other sculpture, I am sure that this one will last for many years.  I like the way that he has combined a fallen tree with a stone wall.

He selects the best photos of his works and assembles them to create a book.  Each book focuses on a different topic, such as wood, time or stone.
