前に仕事関係で、「アメリカ人は７４％が太り過ぎだ」という文の英訳は、74 percent of Americans are overweight. か74 percent of Americans is overweight.、どちらが正しいですか？という質問がありました。これは日本人にとって分かり辛いかもしれないなと思ったので、今回はそれについて説明します。
まず、文章の主語はAmericansではなく、74 percentです。ですので、percentは単数形か複数形かが問題になりますね。
それでは、３分の１を意味するone third や、４分の３を意味するthree quarters という分数を表す英語は、単数形か複数形どちらを使うか分かりますか。
そして、「４分の３切れのピザ」を意味する「three quarters of the pizza」の場合、pizzaは単数なので、three quartersも単数形として扱います。
Three quarters of the pizza was already eaten.
ピザの４分の３はもう食べてしまった。
これは理論的に考えると分かり易いかと思います。まず以下の文を見て下さい。
One percent of Americans like natto.
アメリカ人の１％は納豆が好きだ。
主語のone percentにはoneが入っていますが、「one percent of Americans」はアメリカ人の中の１％、つまり何百万人を表しているので、複数形になるというのが理論的です。
Three quarters of the pizzaにはthreeという数が入っています。しかし、three quarters of the pizzaというのは４分の３ですが１枚のピザを表していますね。
Only ten percent of the students in this school like to study math.
この学校の生徒の10％は数学を勉強するのが好きです。
Nearly one hundred percent of the power in this dam is used by Seattle.
このダムの電力の１００％がシアトルで使われている。
>例えば、「74 percent of Americans」の場合、「Americans」は複数形なので、主語の「percent」は複数形として扱います。 ですので、「74 percent of Americans is overweight.」という文章が正しいものとなります。
複数形なら「are」になるのではないでしょうか？

However,in English you can input like this: 1/2
It’s very easy.
How do you read it?
・ 1/2 : one half
・ 1/4 : one fourth(US), one quarter(UK)
・ 1/10 : one tenth
・ numerator : number
・ denominator : ordinal number
How about 2/4?
It can be read as ‘ two quarterS ‘ (i.e. It’s also one half,though.) Its ordinal number is required to be plural.
How about 2/3?
It is ‘ two thirdS ‘. (i.e. Also ordinal number is to be plural.)

If numerator is 1 on the fraction,the fraction can be express as noun.
・ 1/2 : one half = half (noun) = 1 of 2 equal parts = a half of a whole ( add ‘a’ )
・ 1/4 : one quarter = quarter (noun)

The weight of a Gold nugget are expressed by ‘Troy Ounce’ .
But,there is another ‘Ounce’,too .
・ ‘Ounce’ = a unit for measuring weight .
・ ‘ oz ‘ = written abbreviation of ‘ Ounce ‘
・1 Ounce = 28.35 grams
Then,when the previous fractions are sizes of gold nuggets minted in denominations of each fractions,how those can be expressed?
