皆さんは dish という単語を見ると何を想像しますか？dish には２つの意味があります。まず基本的な意味は、「お皿の形をしたもの」です。意味を見て分かるように、食べ物を入れるお皿だけではありません。

しかし、１つ目よりよく使われている意味は、「料理」です。特に、「お皿に盛られた料理」を指します。日本でも、コース料理でメインになる料理、主に肉料理や魚料理を「メインディッシュ」といいますね。それなので、英語圏で
What is your favorite dish?
と聞かれたら、食器の店にでもいない限り、
あなたの一番好きなお皿はなんですか？
ではなく
あなたが一番好きな料理はなんですか？
という意味になります。

そして、食後にネイティブはよく、
I’ll do the dishes.
皿洗いするよ。
と言います。
そして、dish に out を付けると動詞にもなります。

I went out to a restaurant with my friend for dinner yesterday.
It was Smorgasbord style which serves dishes from New Zealand.
( I’m not eny student,you know? 🙂
My favorite dishes are Norwegian Salmon ( I think Norway is not a part of NZ,though.lol),
NZ Fish & Tips, NZ Angus beef and other things at the restaurant.
One expat served NZ Angus beef.
I thought he was neither New Zealander nor European.
Probably,American or Canadian or Australian.
Anyway,I thought how to ask order in English on the following situation :
・ The serving was not enough for one person.
( He could have served lots of beef If he would served the dishes at the restaurant in US.
I have eaten lots of beef at the restaurant nearby the musical theater in New York.
So,I know the serving amount for one person in actually.)
・ When he served the dish for two people,he asked me if he could dish out two servings on a plate. And,I didn’t mind it.
・ I’d like to have still the above one for two people.
Then,I think I can say the phrase,” Can I have two servings on a plate for two person? “.
I’ll try it even though he speaks Japanese fluently,though… 🙂
