多くの日本人は、「When are you open?」と「When do you open?」の違いがイマイチ分からないのではないでしょうか。
実は、「When are you open?」の「open」は形容詞で、「When do you open?」の「open」は動詞になります。ですので、２つの質問の意味と使い方は微妙に違ってくるのです。
ネイティブは「When are you open?」という質問に対し、「We are open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.」や「We are open Monday through Friday.」のように答えます。
そして、「When do you open?」という質問には、「We open at 10:00 a.m.」のように答えます。なぜこのようになるかというと、
では少し考えてみて下さい。とある飲食店の月曜から金曜の営業時間を知りたい場合は、形容詞の「When are you open?」か、動詞の「When do you open？」、どちらの質問を使うのでしょうか。
そうですね、月曜から金曜は５日間、つまり期間なので、「when are you open?」という質問を使います。そして、朝の９時から開いているかどうかを知りたい場合は、動詞の「do you open at」を使います。
